Un storia che, dopo 123 anni, continua oggi con FREE NOW
Il 26 giugno 1896, l'autotrasportatore di Stoccarda Friedrich Greiner commissiona alla Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) di Cannstatt un'automobile molto speciale: una carrozza motorizzata Daimler e equipaggiata con un tassametro, in modo da utilizzare la versione Landaulet della Victoria come un taxi a motore. L'auto, fornita al Cliente nel maggio 1897, portava il numero d’ordine 1.329.
La compagnia di carrozze a cavalli e di autotrasporto di Greiner, presto ribattezzata Daimler Motorized Cab Company, divenne così la prima compagnia di taxi motorizzata al mondo. L’automobile era stata inventata solo dieci anni prima, e nessuno l’aveva mai utilizzata prima come taxi, anche se, proprio nel 1896, Daimler aveva suggerito una carrozza a motore con trasmissione a quattro rapporti e motore a due cilindri verticale (belt-driven car) appositamente per questo scopo. All'inizio dell'estate del 1897, il primo taxi motorizzato del mondo percorreva le strade di Stoccarda e a giugno di quell’anno veniva abilitato dalle autorità per le attività di taxi.
Per la prima volta, inoltre, un sistema di riscaldamento per i passeggeri sui sedili posteriori viene installato su un'autovettura. La caratteristica configurazione ‘Laundolet’ permetteva di scoprire la sezione finale dell’abitacolo e persino rimuovere l'intera sovrastruttura di tetto e porte, per viaggiare competamente a cielo aperto.
70 km al giorno
Greiner ha dovuto investire molto denaro: 5.530 marchi era il prezzo dell'auto con half-top e pneumatici. Oltre a questo, ha dovuto pagare la quota per il tassametro. Ma l'investimento nella nuova tecnologia è stato ripagato: guidando il suo taxi, Greiner ha percorso circa 70 chilometri al giorno - chiaramente più di quanto avrebbe potuto fare con una carrozza trainata da cavalli. La soddisfazione dei clienti è stata rafforzata dal fatto che un taxi a motore costituiva un'esperienza completamente nuova. Il taxi motorizzato era considerato intelligente e veloce e un viaggio a bordo di questa vettura prometteva un pizzico di avventura e un po’ di brivido. La richiesta dei passeggeri per il taxi a motore ha incoraggiato l'operatore del trasporto a investire in ulteriori veicoli. Entro il 1899, Greiner aveva preso in consegna un totale di sette taxi Daimler.
L’idea del taxi a motore impressionò non solo i clienti, ma anche i concorrenti. Un tale signor Dietz, un operatore di taxi trainati da cavalli di Stoccarda, ha ordinato due taxi motorizzati da Benz & Cie a Mannheim. La loro presentazione si è rivelata un evento spettacolare in quanto Dietz riuscì a convincere il capo della polizia di Stoccarda a registrare di persona le vetture. Prima di allora, le vetture avevano dimostrato la loro affidabilità trasportando, sei passeggeri dalla valle di Stoccarda, lungo la ripida strada Weinsteige, fino al sobborgo di Degerloch.
Da Stoccarda al mondo intero
Da Stoccarda, il taxi motorizzato ha iniziato a diffondersi rapidamente in tutto il mondo e dopo il 1899, le flotte di taxi Daimler fecero la loro comparsa nelle grandi città europee. A Berlino, i passeggeri accolsero positivamente questo moderno mezzo di trasporto in Friedrichstraße e ad Amburgo i primi taxi motorizzati erano in fila lungo la Jungfernstieg. Le compagnie di taxi a motore sono state fondate a Parigi, Londra, Vienna e altre metropoli.
I media commentarono il nuovo mezzo con curiosità e attenzione. Mentre alcuni espressero grande entusiasmo per la nuova soluzione di mobilità, altri furono, invece, abbastanza critici, poiché i taxi motorizzati causavano incidenti e intimorivano i cavalli. In risposta, vennero offerte lezioni di guida ai tassisti, e molti ex cocchieri di carrozze trainate da cavalli tornarono a scuola per riqualificarsi come autisti del nuovo veicolo motorizzato.
Durante i primi anni del XX secolo, il numero di taxi motorizzati nelle grandi città aumentò rapidamente. Accanto ai taxi a benzina, ce n’erano numerosi con trazione elettrica o ibrida. Quest'ultimi includevano le vetture Mercedes Mixte prodotte nello stabilimento Daimler del sobborgo viennese di Neustadt, in Austria. Sia DMG che Benz & Cie hanno riconosciuto fin dall’inizio il grande potenziale dei tassisti come target di clienti. Le pietre miliari nello sviluppo dei taxi di Stoccarda furono, ad esempio, la Mercedes-Benz da 8/38 CV del 1927 e la Mercedes-Benz 260 D del 1936, la prima autovettura con motore diesel.
Dal primo taxi a FREE NOW
Mercedes-Benz continua ancora oggi ad essere a fianco dei tassisti di tutto il mondo. Un impegno che si concretizza non solo attraverso i prodotti e allestimenti dedicati, ma anche grazie a nuove soluzioni di mobilità che hanno rivoluzionato il mondo dei taxi. Nel giugno del 2009 nasce, infatti, mytaxi, la prima app di taxi al mondo a stabilire un collegamento diretto tra passeggeri e tassisti. Con oltre 14 milioni di passeggeri e 100.000 tassisti, mytaxi è la principale app di e-hailing (chiamata taxi tramite applicazione) in Europa. Dal febbraio 2019, mytaxi fa parte del gruppo FREE NOW, la joint venture di BMW e Daimler dedicata al ride-hailing. Entro l’estate mytaxi cambierà brand e diventerà definitivamente FREE NOW. mytaxi oggi lavora con 700 dipendenti in 26 uffici ed è disponibile in circa 100 città europee.
